In Partnership With Communities, AzYP Cultivates Healthy Foundations for Youth and Promotes Strong Families

Healthy Youth. Healthy Families. Healthy Communities.

AzYP’s life enhancing programs take a three-pronged, comprehensive approach focusing in three areas: Community Mobilization, Foundations for Youth, and Championing Families.

Monique- Phoenix, Rising

Monique made some bad decisions and was taken into the Juvenile Justice system. After being released to her parents she was ordered to attend AzyP’s WAKE UP! course. While in the program, Monique realized the destructive path her life was headed and vowed to make healthier decisions.

Kimberly- New Choices

“Thank you for explaining about abstinence and renewed virginity. I have made some decisions that I regret and dealt with some of the consequences that you have talked about this week. I’m going to make some changes, and I am going to start by signing the abstinence pledge.”

Promising Practice

In June 2009 Arizona Youth Partnership’s Healthy Marriages/Strong Families program received nation-wide notoriety and was awarded “Promising Practice” status by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Family Assistance; only sixteen of the two hundred twenty six grantees received such awards.

Susan- Effective Communication

Susan, an eighth grade peer mentor, found herself in a bad situation that led to a meeting with the school Principal. With her newly acquired skills, she was able to clearly, honestly, and directly communicate with adults. “It means a lot to me to finally understand how to communicate.”.

Harbor House Gives Beacon of Hope

Harbor House Gives Beacon of Hope to Homeless Youth

HarborHouse

Arizona Youth Partnership in March 2012 extended its program offerings in Kingman, Arizona to include a Basic Center program called Harbor House.  The main focus of Harbor House is to address the needs of runaway and homeless youth and their families in Kingman and its surrounding rural communities.  The program is built on the principles of positive youth development, emphasizing the strength of each individual and family unit served.

Harbor House offers temporary shelter for up to 21 days to up to 30 runaway and homeless male youth each year. The center currently has five (5) beds available for emergency shelter. Harbor House will reach more youth through several outreach activities throughout the year.  Female youth will be referred to Cornerstone Mission’s Women and Children’s Center. In addition to safe temporary shelter, Harbor House hosts weekly youth sessions focusing on life skills and character development utilizing two curriculums: Teen Outreach Program and Botvin’s Life Skills.

“Harbor House provides a safe environment for youth to regroup and chart a new course in their life.  Our goal is to place them in a safe, stable living environment,” explains Lisa Beauchamp, Program Director of Harbor House.   Many young adults in Kingman struggle with not only peer pressure, but the effects of increased family conflict, domestic violence and alcohol/substance abuse.  Harbor House works with youth and their caregivers to create an individualized life plan to either reunite youth with their families or another trusted adult.  Components of the plan may include personal goals, counseling, job skills, drug and alcohol education and academics.

According to the State of Arizona, in 2009, there were 54 unaccompanied youth in Mohave County, which represents 23% of homeless youth in the entire state of Arizona even though the population of Mohave County only accounts for 3% of the total state population. Additionally there were a total of 52 youth (accompanied and unaccompanied) in shelters in Mohave County.

If you have questions about Harbor House please call during office hours (928) 718-0442. If you have a placement or need help after hours please call the 24 hour hotline number (928) 235-5549.
